Bow Tattoos

Bow tattoos are popular choices for women seeking feminine tattoos. They are commonly placed on the nape of the neck, wrist, ankle, and lower back areas—all sensual areas of the female body. They are generally inked in pink, red, purple and blue hues more often than they are applied as greyscale pieces. With such a wide variety of shapes, styles and sizes, bow tattoos are most often chosen as statements of femininity by women from all walks of life.

Variations of Bow Tattoos
Bow tattoos can be simple design pieces—generally stiff and puffy or thin and flowing. Short puffy bows work well in combination with hearts, gems, jewelry, teddy bears, and gift box tattoos. Female cartoon characters such as Hello Kitty and Minnie Mouse sport these large bow styles and are commonly used is tattoo designs for women seeking connections to their childhood. Ironically, female skull tattoos adorned with puffy bows and jewelry, sporting heart shapes as eye sockets, and inked in pinks and purples are new school designs that are growing in popularity.

Long flowing bows work well with script as well as at the top or bottom of lacing ribbon (generally seen on the back of the legs to imitate sexy hosiery). However, these types of bows also work well by themselves, particularly when flowing down the nape of the neck where the bow's "legs" have room to drift in an asymmetrical pattern—adding a carefree feeling to the design.

Bow Tattoo Meanings
Bow tattoos can carry many meanings depending on the style, color and placement of the designs. For example, a bow placed around one's finger may represent a "reminder" of a date (such as an anniversary), person (one's child or deceased parent), or a meaningful message (such as living each day to the fullest). However, the bow's color may be an indicator of a deeper meaning. Below is a list of ink colors that are commonly used for bow tattoos and what those colors may represent:

Yellow bows: generally associated with honoring the death of military personnel
Pink bows: could represent either "a girl at heart" or a connection to breast cancer
Red bows: generally represent gifts and love
Black bows: most often seen as bow ties representing male formal wear
