Devil Tattoos

Originally believed to be a sign of evil, devil tattoos have since grown in both meaning and popularity for both men and women. The feminine versions tend to be cherub-like figures with horns, forked tails and devilish smiles – suggesting mischievous personalities. Generally small in size, these characters are commonly placed on the shoulder blade, chest and abdominal areas. Men, on the other hand, often prefer realistic portraits of Satan or images of she-devils wearing sexy clothing with pouty lips – similar to old school pin-up girls. These larger works of art are commonly placed on the forearm, bicep, chest, and back areas. With such vast differences in styles, there is one unisex design that can be large or small, color or monotone, cartoon-like or more refined: an angle on one shoulder and a devil on the other. This particular tattoo design represents internal struggle and the fight between right and wrong, making it ideal for both sexes.

What does the Devil look like?
The Devil (also referred to as Satan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Iblis, Aggadon and Angra Mainyu to name a few) is most often depicted in devil tattoos as a horned man (sometimes beast) with a goatee beard, pointed ears, and long forked tail. Baring red skin, the Devil is frequently drawn with an evil smile while being surrounded by flames, smoke or demons. He is known as the supreme spirit of evil.

Satan may also be portrayed as a hoofed, goat-like beast – potentially a reference to the Pagan religion or satanism.

Colors of Devil Tattoos
The majority of devil tattoos incorporate red ink either as the Devil’s skin color or as part of a flaming background, which may also include yellow ink. Black ink is not only used for the outline, but also to suggest deep shadows to create a dark feeling to the overall tattoo design. However, for a less colorful tattoo, a monotone portrait using intricate shading techniques can be a powerful image particularly when done as a large backpiece.

Devil Tattoos Depicting Sins
For those with a liking for gambling, devil tattoos incorporating dice, playing cards or poker chips may be fitting. Those who enjoy alcohol may choose a combination of Satan and whiskey, beer bottles or even a flask. Smokers may choose portraits of Satan as a cigar afficionado or puffing on a cigarette. And for men wishing to flaunt their liking of women and sex, a topless she-devil in knee-high boots may be the perfect design. Whatever one’s desire, today’s professional tattoo artists are able to fluidly merge Satan with any combination of objects for a more personalized devil tattoo.

Cartoon Devil Tattoos
Cartoon devil tattoos normally take the shape of a horned imp or young she-devil. Most have dimpled cheeks, are bald, and wear diapers while the young she-devils have long, flowing hair and sport small spaghetti strap dresses. Inked with red skin, the baby devils generally carry a pitchfork and are engaged in mischievous actions. These small designs are not only chosen for their whimsical nature, but also for their ability to fit numerous areas of the body including arms, ankles, chests and bikini lines.
